Chapman University, founded in 1861, is one of the oldest institutions of higher learning in California.

Fullerton College is the oldest community college in continuous operation in California. It was established as a department of Fullerton Union High School on April 25, 1913, and became a district junior college in 1922.

In the fall of 1997, Whittier Law School moved from Whittier to its new campus in Costa Mesa.
