Founded by the German
immigrant colony Los Angeles Vineyard Society, the name was combined
from a derivation of the name of the Santa Ana River (Ana) and
the German word for "home" (heim). The colony, established in
1857, was the first large agricultural settlement in the Los Angeles
area.
