City of Dana Point General Law City Dana Point Chamber of Commerce: PO Box 12, Dana Point, CA 92629-0012; (949) 496-1555; Fax (949) 496-5321 The bay was originally named Bahia de San Juan Capistrano (Spanish for San Juan Capistrano Bay). The U.S. Coastal Survey in 1884 applied the name Dana to a triangulation point along the coast in the area. The name was for author Richard Henry Dana Jr. who wrote the classic sea journal Two Years Before the Mast (1840). The trading ship on which Dana sailed (Pilgrim) had anchored in the area. Dana wrote of it as "the most romantic spot on the California coast." In 1902, the U.S. Geological Survey applied the name Dana to the area's point and cove.
