Originally named Richland in the 1870s,  the name was changed to Orange because there existed another Richland within the state (Sacramento County). The local post office first opened in 1873 and adopted the name Orange.  Although the name is often attributed to the new emerging citrus industry in the area (oranges were first grown here in 1873), it is also a fact that the Glassell family, one of the founders of the town site, once lived in Orange County, Virginia. That county was named for the Prince of Orange, son-in-law of King George II.
